Stroll along Bei Dajie
Among the nine old streets of Zhujiajiao, Bei Dajie is the best preserved ancient street with some of the buildings dating back to the Qing Dynasty era (1644-1912).
Nowadays, numerous restaurants, bars and cafes line both sides of the narrow street. You can stroll along the street to see the ancient buildings, taste local snacks, or relax in an artistic bar.
Visit Kezhi Yuan
Kezhi Yuan at the northern end of the old quarter on Xijing Street is a garden dating from 1912. The word “kezhi” means learn to plant, so it was once a place to see and learn about them.
The area consists of a main hall, a garden and an artificial hill. The landmark of the gardens is a five-story building with a pavilion on its roof which is the tallest structure in the ancient town of Zhujiajiao.
Take a Zhujiajiao cruise
Small gondolas can be seen all over the city and are a good way to get a view of the city from the water. Each gondola can accommodate six people.
There are two types of trips:
- Short distance. It takes passengers up and down the main canal and the price is around 80 yuan (around €10) per boat for around 10 minutes.
- Long distance. It makes a full round trip from the city and the price is 150 yuan (about €19) per boat. Tickets can be purchased from small wooden ticket offices in town.
Visit Fangsheng Bridge
Fangsheng Bridge is one of the main attractions among the ancient 36 stone bridges, some of which are only one meter wide. It was built in 1812 and is said to be the largest stone arch bridge in Shanghai, resting on five arches and measuring approximately 70 meters long and 5.8 meters high.
Advice : A great way to see Fangsheng Bridge is on a small boat tour that can accommodate five adults or six children. The price of this brief trip is generally 80 yuan (€10).
